The cost is broken down into two parts: air fare, and everything else. The air fare to Peru is the variable part, of course, and ranges from about US$ 1,200 to US$ 1,500 or so. The rest of the expenses are covered by a US$ 2,500 flat fee. That includes all lodging, most meals, ground transportation, tours, guides, medicines and clinic supplies, taxes, and a small donation to CPR. Basically, the only things not covered are alcohol, souvenirs, between-meals snacks, tips, personal medications, and film (or digital camera chips). Some of
the specifics are as follows.
- Ground
transportation covers transportation to and from the airport and daily
trips between the worksite and the hotel.
- Our
teams usually stay in hotels or B&Bs that are
clean and comfortable by any standard.
We cannot afford luxury suites but most of our team members are
pleasantly surprised at their accommodations.
- Meals
may be home cooked but are more often prepared in a restaurant that has
been inspected by our staff for appropriate health standards.
- We
make every effort to provide purified bottled drinking water and recommend
that our participants make an effort to maintain additional
hydration.
- Airport
taxes are required at nearly every non-US airport.
- We
purchase medicines to bring into the country in stock bottles so that our
supply is more easily managed. In
the past, many hours have been spent by team members, reducing sample
containers to plastic bags-full of capsules, only to have customs
officials refuse to allow entry because of improper packaging and
documentation.
- An
additional fee is added to the total cost to cover the expenses of
CPR.
